THE INSTITUTE BELL

The Ashley Memorial Institute Bell was removed from the building for safety reasons during the 1960's and then forgotten. It reappeared in 2003.

It is made of bronze, with an
iron clapper and bracket.
The iron parts have rusted severely, but the bell itself
is in excellent condition.
It is inscribed with
the maker's name and date,
MEARS & STAINBANK, LONDON 1893. There is also
an exhortation in Latin, 'LECTUM FUGE, DISCUTE SOMNUM'. This means 'Flee your bed, shake off sleep'.

Institute Bell

There is, however, a small puzzle. The Memorial Institute was not built until 1898, and there is a stone with this date above the front window. So why is the bell dated five years earlier? Had the bell been intended for use on another building?
